It seems that many mechanics and businesses that served the venerable series 60 have quit or gone out of business.

I'm in the Temecula, Ca. area and first need someone to do a quick diagnosis.  I'm willing to have it towed up to 100 miles if necessary.

It was running on 5 cylinders for over 100 miles, so I fear it needs a rebuild.

Engine swap may also be in the cards if an engine is available TO PASS the tough california smog rules.

The Prevost dealership in Mira Loma, Ca. does not do engine work and only grudgingly agreed to work on other issues.  The DD facility near them went out of business.

Any ideas?  all are welcome,

Thanks

We have a couple options here in TN but I don't know anyone in CA. The mechanic list is back up now and the list is long for CA.
Leid Diesel in PA specializes in old Detroit engines and stock all parts, they still rebuild even the 2 strokes.

It is a long distance but WW Williams in Phoenix will work on your bus engine. That engine in H-3 is easy to remove 4 hours max and you can take it to dealer on a trailer, what is the problem did you lose the bull gear, liner problem or a overhead problem? if a liner sunk in the block which is a  common problem, buy a exchange engine ,Randy at PC Industries in Afton WY will  have a rebuilt exchange 60 series engine or American Fleet but he is in Springfield Mo.

J&R Diesel in Riverside, California, may be able to help, as you can read in this article written a couple of years ago by Jon Usle.

Friend of mine bought one (longblock) off these folks and had it shipped to him first of this year. He was pleased.

Your best bet is find a good independent shop the series 60 is a engine that has been out of production for over 15 years now the 12.7 almost 20 years now. Some DD dealers will still work on 1 for fill in spots but most use the 10 years old rule and don't offer much support. In your area Valley Power would be a choice maybe, but with new owners WW Williams they may not support the series 60 in Ca. The factory rebuilt engines (reilbilt) are built by Interstate Mcbee now with aftermarket parts made by Mcbee. A couple of more years series 60 engines owners will be in the boat as the old 2 strokes DD owners. I have a dislike for the liner kits now made in China and Pakistan I think they use a yard stick to measure the tolerances, I am having a set of liners made by the outfit that made the OEMs liner here in the US for DD, they cost me a small fortune, but I don't want to deal the junk anymore or MTU and their parent company BMW. You will have sticker shock on a rebuild at a DD dealer for that engine at around 50 k
